Overview
A Canadian Work Permit authorises a foreign national to work in Canada temporarily. There are two main types: Employer-Specific (closed) work permits tied to one employer, and Open Work Permits (OWP) allowing work with almost any employer. Many work permit holders use their Canadian work experience to qualify for permanent residence.

Eligibility Requirements
- ✓Valid job offer from a Canadian employer (employer-specific permit)
- ✓LMIA approval OR LMIA-exempt category (IMP, CUSMA, etc.)
- ✓Sufficient funds to support yourself and dependents
- ✓No criminal record and pass security screening
- ✓Pass medical examination if required
- ✓Genuine intention to leave Canada at end of permit (unless PR pathway)
